Center for Jewish Life
The Center for Jewish Life in Mount Pleasant, an initiative of Chabad of Charleston and the Lowcountry, opened this 16,000-square-foot facility in 2016. Situated on three acres set back from the street, landscaped by Katie Duncan, the building was designed by the local firm McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture, with due attention to minimizing waste, incorporating reclaimed materials, and installing low-energy lighting. Neither a synagogue nor a traditional Jewish community center, the new Center features two big classrooms for preschoolers, a library, offices, and a reception area, a glatt kosher demonstration kitchen, an out-of-sight place for food preparation, a dining room, and a large communal space for special events and gatherings, family occasions, religious rituals, and other activities.
