The intersection of Broad and King streets was designated the Henry Berlin Block in December 2017, with Mayors John Tecklenburg and Joseph P. Riley in attendance. The signage recognizes the man who ran the family clothing business from 1958 to 2004. Henry Berlin died at age 93, a month after the dedication.
Across Broad Street, embedded in the pavement, is an historical plaque marking the introduction of gas light to the city. Though not mentioned by name, Joshua Lazarus, scion of a prominent Sephardic family and president of Charleston’s Gas Light Company from 1840 to 1856, was instrumental in this development.
