The Center for Jewish Life in Mount Pleasant, an initiative of Chabad of Charleston and the Lowcountry, opened this 16,000-square-foot facility in 2016. Situated on three acres set back from the street, landscaped by Katie Duncan, the building was designed by the local firm McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture, with due attention to minimizing waste, incorporating reclaimed materials, and installing low-energy lighting. Neither a synagogue nor a JCC, the Center is laid out to accommodate a range of community functions, featuring two big classrooms for preschoolers, a library, offices and a reception area, a central kosher kitchen, an out-of-sight food preparation space, and a large communal room for special events and gatherings, family occasions, religious ritual, and other activities.
