A physician-pharmacist
Philip M. Cohen graduated from the Medical College in Charleston in 1836, and opened a pharmacy in this building. Philip’s younger brother Lawrence L. Cohen graduated from the Medical College two years later, and joined him in the business. By 1841, Philip’s stepfather-in-law, Hyam Cohen, the City Assessor, had also moved his office here.
