The 1930s Kress Store on King Street occupies the location of two Jewish businesses. J. L. David, clothier & furnisher, opened his establishment at 279 King Street before 1880. In late 1896, J. L. David & Bro. announced a storewide sale of their “best wearables for men and boys; high-class clothing, hats and furnishings.” The clearance sale was in anticipation of relocating the business to 273 King Street, about a block south. Next door, at 281 King Street, was Alexander A. Hirsch’s shoe store.
