Marx H. Lazarus

267 King Street

Born in South Carolina, Marx Hubert Lazarus (1846–1914) went to work for Hart and Co. Hardware (218–220 King Street) in 1865 at age nineteen. Before 1880, he opened his own wholesale/retail hardware store, and, by 1898, his successful business, M. H. Lazarus, Foreign and Domestic Hardware, was operating in this modern three-story building at 267 King Street. In 1909, Lazarus bought the building at 254 King Street and moved a block south from this location.
