Late-nineteenth century residence of William Bentschner Cohen (1860–1934) and his wife, Sarah Jacobi (1863–1928). W. B. Cohen became president of Louis Cohen & Co. (232–234 King Street) upon his father’s retirement. By 1910, he and Sarah had moved from this house into the Cohen family home at 128 Wentworth Street.

The next residents of 37 Smith Street were Frank and Fredericka “Fanny” Lief Read. Frank was the owner and proprietor of Read Brothers (formerly Read & Dumas and The Leader) at 593 King Street.
